About Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an ancient & natural system of medicine, healing the root-cause of illness and purifying body, mind, & soul .Its focus covers health, career, relationships & spiritual life with herbs, nutrition, aromas, yoga, mantras, life-purpose & many more other aspects of life & nature.

Origin of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an intricate system of healing that originated in India thousands of years ago. We can find historical evidence of Ayurveda in the ancient books of wisdom known as the Vedas. The Rig Veda was written over 6,000 years ago, but really Ayurveda has been around even longer than that.

Dhanvantari

Lord Dhanvantari is known as the father of Ayurveda, since he was the first divine incarnation to impart its wisdom amongst humans. He first appeared during the great churning of the cosmic ocean of milk (Samudra manthan) to deliver amrit (ambrosia, or Divine nectar) to the demigods. The churning of the ocean of milk is a famous episode in the Puranas that represents the spiritual endeavor of a person to achieve Self-realization through concentration of mind, senses.

Principles

Ayurveda categorizes the different constitutions into three different doshas:
1) Vata dosha, in which the air and space elements dominate
2) Pitta dosha, in which the fire element dominates.
3) Kapha dosha, in which the earth and water elements dominates.
The dosha affects not just the shape of one’s body but also bodily tendencies (like food preferences and digestion), and the temperament of one’s mind and emotions.

Ayurveda & Yoga

Ayurveda and Yoga are science sisters. While Ayurveda is mainly concerned with the health of the body and the mind, Yoga deals with mental health issues. Yoga exercises help with their preventive and curative effect to bring the neurohormones and the metabolism of the body in a natural order and improve endocrine metabolism. This practice covers the stress and stress-related disorders in a natural way.The main purpose of yoga is to increase the strength of the body.

The word 'kaya' (body) not only refers to the gross body of a person but to the subtle body as well. This natural alternative medicine recognizes that the body of a person is the product of the constant psychosomatic interactions. The imbalances in the three dosha’s, vata-pitta-kapha occur sometimes by the mind and sometimes by the body's dhatu (tissues) and mala (toxin deposits).

Hence, the kayachikitsa branch of this system of herbal and holistic medicine, delves deep into ascertaining the root cause of the illness. Then only a suitable treatment is recommended to bring back mind and body into balance. Though the prescription might give an impression that the treatment is meant for the physical body, these in fact have a strong impact on mind and soul of a person.
